Things That Can Ruin Your Landscaping

A well designed and maintained landscape is beautiful to behold. Unfortunately, there are a number of things that can occur that will ruin the entire landscape. Some situations you can control, others you can’t.

Insects

Insects are all around, but an infestation is something to avoid at all costs. The problem with insects is that you never know when they’re going to appear, from where, and in what numbers. There’s also the potential for an invasive species with no natural predators. Trying to control them with chemical methods can result in the death of beneficial insects and your plantings.

Too Much Water

South Florida receives a significant amount of rain each year and it’s typically more than enough to keep plants hydrated. However, the area is also at the mercy of hurricanes and storm surges that can wash miles inland. Plants don’t like salt water. Even localized flooding from a heavy rain can be detrimental.

Drought

While drought isn’t a situation that typically occurs in Florida, the possibility does exist. Install a programmable irrigation system with a moisture detector to deliver just the right amount water to each individual area. Always water during cooler evening hours.

Chemicals

The use of chemicals, whether it’s fertilizer, an herbicide or insecticide, can do irreparable damage to lawns and other plantings.

Inappropriate Planting

Installing the wrong type of plant in the environment can quickly lead to several problems. Some spread quickly, overgrow their neighbors, and become invasive. Others need different growing conditions than where they’ve been installed. Planting too close together creates overcrowding and discourages healthy growth. It also sets up conditions for disease and pests.

Over Trimming

In your pursuit of keeping lawns mowed, trees trimmed and bushes beat back, you can inadvertently over mow, cut and trim. Some types of plantings may be able to slowly recover. Others can’t. Trim and cut judiciously and keep lawns to about 3½ inches. Any shorter and it weakens the roots, resulting in poor growth or death that will leave bare patches.

Welcoming Landscapes

Before creating a welcoming landscape, it’s important to understand what it is. Better known as curb appeal, it includes the arrangement of plants and decorative features around the home. It’s a combination of factors that makes someone smile when they see their house. It’s a feeling of pride and children’s eagerness to invite friends over. In short, a welcoming landscape is a place of beauty that seems to say, “Come in and visit.”

The front yard is the first thing that people see when they look at a home. Creating a welcoming landscape can encompass a wide variety of techniques, such as removing overgrown bushes, trimming back hedges, or adding attractive fencing. It can include a pathway, decorative features, and specific plantings to highlight unique architecture.

Creating a social space is an invitation to neighbors to say hello or stop and chat. It can be achieved with appropriate lawn furniture or something as simple as adding a deck or a porch swing.

Flowers are always a welcoming sight. They can be used to create a bright splash of color or gently lead people to the front door. The great thing about flower beds is that they can be established directly in the ground or homeowners can utilize simple raised beds and those that use decorative planters.

Sometimes a simple welcome message such as a door wreath or potted plants around the door can change the atmosphere. The type of steps leading into the front door can transform the entire feel of a home. Steps that are entirely utilitarian in nature will get people in the house, but an open set of steps invites people to sit and linger.

Every property is different and will require crafting different and unique solutions. The endeavor begins with the front yard – it’s the first thing that others see whether the homeowner is planning to sell or spend a lifetime in the home. A welcoming landscape will be part of the precious memories families recall about their home.

When is it Time to Refresh Your Landscape?

A professionally designed landscape will add beauty and visual interest for many years as it changes and evolves. However, there comes a time when the green space you’re living with just doesn’t evoke the same joy as it once did. When that happens, it may be time to refresh your landscape.

It’s a good idea to look closely at your landscape every 5-10 years and evaluate its appearance. Improper pruning and plantings that have sustained significant damage need to be removed and/or replaced. The same can be said for flowers, bushes or hedges that have overgrown their space. If you can’t enjoy your property in the way you wish, it’s time for an update.

Begin by really looking at the front yard. The entry should be open, attractive and welcoming. Pedestrians shouldn’t scurry by your home as if it were a haunted house. Visitors should be able to clearly see the driveway and open their car doors all the way to exit their vehicle without stepping on plants or scratching their car.

Lighting after dark is always a welcome addition. It conveys a sense of warmth and is essential for guests trying to navigate walkways and stairs. Plant and trees shouldn’t encroach on walkways. Take a walk back and forth in front of your home and try to see it from the perspective of a stranger.

If you’re spending a significant amount of time and money watering your property, it may be time to install a programmable irrigation system and transition to a more low-maintenance landscape. You’ll save time and money with both.

Backyards need tender loving care, too. If the backyard isn’t being used to its full potential or the family’s needs have changed, it’s time to refresh your landscape. Pools, decks, balconies, and fireplaces can make a dramatic difference and create a space you’ll cherish.
