Unique Looking Trees for South Florida

Most are familiar with the shape of maples, oaks and flowering pear trees. There are some unusual trees native to countries around the world that can be grown in Florida due to the state’s unique climate. The trees have unusual appearances, growth habits, and histories that make them well worth the effort. It’s important before planting any species to ensure it’s not invasive.

Baobab

The first impression when people see a Baobab tree is that it was planted upside down. The effect is heightened when the tree sheds it leaves. It can be grown in South Florida, but may be tricky. It’s often referred to as the “Tree of Life” since it can live thousands of years. The trunks can hold several gallons of water and in its native Africa, it’s tapped and plugged for water.

Dawn Redwood

A holdover from prehistoric times and once thought to be extinct, it’s a deciduous tree that looks like an evergreen and has a distinctly pyramidal shape. The tree’s needles turn yellow and rust red each year before dropping. The hardy tree regrows its foliage each spring. It’s the smallest of the redwood species and can even survive northern winters.

Dragon’s Blood Tree

A native of the Socotra archipelago, it’s technically not a tree and gets its name from the red sap it produces. Its upturned canopy resembles an umbrella. Scientists classify the tree as a remnant of the Mio-Pliocene Laurasian forests that are almost entirely extinct.

Jabuticaba Tree

It’s an ordinary looking tree native to Brazil – until it produces fruit. Hairy white blooms give way to black fruit that grows in the branches and along the trunk. If conditions are right, it can fruit several times a year and many use the fruits to make juice or wine.

Rainbow Eucalyptus

This isn’t a tree to be grown in limited space as it can grow up to 250 ft. tall and is one of the fastest growing in the world. It gets its name from the strange coloration it displays when its bark is shed and each layer can be a different color. Over time, it returns to its natural brown hue before repeating the process. It has leaves that are more than six inches long that are aromatic when crushed and small white flowers when in bloom. It doesn’t tolerate frost.

Lighting Can Make Your Yard Stand Out

One of the most under-utilized and misunderstood components of landscaping is lighting. It has the ability to beautify properties, increase curb appeal, and improve security. The installation of an outdoor lighting system can be used as accent lighting for unique plant specimens and to create dramatic effects for pools, fountains and waterfalls.

A well-lit yard is an effective deterrent to intruders and trespassers. Properties can be tastefully and artfully illuminated, while still remaining unattractive to those up to no good. It requires proper positioning to ensure the yard is lit without being a distraction, while eliminating shadowy areas in which people can conceal themselves.

At the same time, adding an outdoor illumination system also increases curb appeal. It’s essential for entryways to be well-lighted. It makes the home look inviting, welcoming, and it’s easier to see anyone that approaches the door after dark. It’s an important component of safety for friends and family so they don’t trip or fall on steps, stairs or other potential hazards.

Homes with unusual or unique architectural features can benefit from lighting that highlights rockwork, pillars and similar items. There are specific tricks to getting the lighting angled correctly so it showcases rather than making those features look garish. The same is true for garden attributes. Select lighting options are an effective way to highlight specific items within the landscape such as statuary, waterfalls, pools, and topiaries.

Lighting in any environment is important and especially so when highlighting homes or landscape features. There’s a myriad of selections from which to choose and the best way to know all the options is to seek the services of a landscape lighting designer. He/she can create a single illumination plan to accomplish safety, curb appeal and beautification, while maintaining the character of the home and surrounding landscape.

Regular Property Maintenance is Essential to your Business

The exterior of any property directly influences the way individuals perceive a business whether it’s a retail operation, rental property, industrial complex, or commercial endeavor. Properties that are aesthetically pleasing to view attract more clients and customers. It’s one of the most important aspects of property management for any enterprise.

Property management involves much more than a pleasing appearance, though that’s a definite consideration. A well-maintained property projects a sense of quality, safety, and respectability. That image can be projected by maintaining the exterior of structures and surrounding grounds. Property is an asset and regular maintenance enhances its value and is an important means of promoting the business.

Maintenance also ensures the safety of all that enter the premises. Accidents are an inevitable part of life and appropriate maintenance substantially reduces the potential for a lawsuit should employees or clients be injured.

Keeping people happy is a full-time job when operating any type of business. It pays off through the acquisition of more clients and a workforce that’s more productive. That’s the beauty and value of maintaining properties in top condition. Employees enjoy coming to work, renters are more likely to become long-term tenants, and customers are eager to recommend the business to family and friends.

Regular maintenance encompasses a variety of things. It means that green spaces are mowed and well-kept, which can involve the installation of an irrigation system that will also save time and money. Any damage or vandalism to exteriors is repaired promptly and it can include the installation of fences for ornamentation and safety.

Don’t overlook the advantages of mini-makeovers and upgrades. They can radically change the appearance and perception of any property, whether it’s a new coat of paint, planting some trees and flowers, or installing decorative touches. Custom designs can be created to accommodate any need that will also serve to increase the value of the property.

Weed Control! Is it Even Possible?

There are hundreds of places where weeds can crop up. Good weed control begins with appropriate precautions. There are numerous methods that can be utilized to minimize weed growth in lawns, flowerbeds and gardens that that doesn’t rely on chemicals.

Till the Soil

Tilling and turning the soil between plants makes it more difficult for weeds to root. It’s a strategy that should only be performed by landscaping professionals. They have the knowledge and experience to do so without inadvertently spreading weed seeds.

Mulching

In addition to impeding weed growth, mulching aids in retaining moisture for desirable plants. As the mulch breaks down and decomposes, it contributes to the health of the soil.

Landscape Fabric/Plastic Sheets

Landscape fabric is constructed with very tiny holes that allow water to flow through to the soil while blocking shoots from weeds. It’s best used in conjunction with mulch. Plastic sheeting can be laid in flower beds to block weed growth. Cutouts in the plastic allow for the planting of desirable plants in specific ways.

Edging

Using edging around plant beds and along drives and walkways prevents weeds from sending roots into unwanted areas and spreading.

Autumn Care

Many common weeds are dead by the autumn. Reseeding a lawn is one method that can be employed in the fall to help combat weeds. As the grass seed germinates and attempts to spread its roots, it will help block weeds that are trying to rejuvenate themselves and make it more difficult for them to take root in the spring.

It’s essential that the seeds from weeds not be allowed to be disseminated to sow themselves in other locations. The best way to accomplish that is by eliminating them before they have time to flower and spread or by burning stalks. A single dandelion has the ability to produce 15,000 seeds every year and they have a high germination rate.

A thick and healthy lawn will reduce the growth of weeds through the simply expedient of crowding them out. Groundcovers are also an option to minimize weeds. The truth is that weeds exploit any open area. There’s no way to completely and permanently prevent weeds, but they can be significantly reduced.

Keeping Pests at Bay

There are any number of unwelcome pests that can wreak havoc on lawns, flowers, hedges and trees. From chemicals to organic measures, there are numerous ways to discourage pests from lunching on plants and hedges in the landscape.

Chemicals are typically the first solution that people consider. If not applied correctly, they can damage the very plants that are trying to be saved. Using chemicals is best left to the professionals, especially if children or pets may come in contact with the treated areas. Chemicals are a response to a pest problem that’s already occurred.

For those that prefer a proactive approach that utilizes natural methods, there are a number of plants that can be cultivated that will repel insects and rodents. Peppermint, spearmint and pennyroyal are deterrents for ants and aphids. Garlic, alliums, oregano, daffodils, lavender and savory are helpful in masking the aroma of plants insects and rodents want to eat or will repel them entirely.

Pheromone traps are highly effective and will only lure the type of insect or rodent that’s invading the environment. The traps are easily disposed of and can aid in monitoring the scope of the problem. Insect-killing soaps made from natural ingredients are also available to control aphids, spider mites and similar pests, but isn’t effective once it dries.

Another way to address an insect problem is by attracting beneficial insects to the environment that also prey upon the undesirable bugs. It’s an option that really needs the input from a professional to determine what the insect problem is first.

A tidy yard is the best way to keep insects and rodents from invading the landscape in the first place. Dispose of leaves, brush piles, and other plant debris where the pests can live. Overwatering and insufficient air flow among plants is an invitation to insects. Wood piles should be moved from time to time so rodents don’t become comfortable.

Good Commercial Landscaping Should Attract Customers

Landscaping encompasses much more than simply planting a few flowers or trees. It’s an investment in a business that increases its value, presents a positive appearance, and has the ability to attract new customers.

Color affects people in a positive way on an emotional and psychological level. It’s the color of renewal and growth, both of which commercial enterprises want to cultivate to potential customers and established clients. Properly landscaped grounds invite people to stop and come inside. Green in all of its many shades is a cheerful color that makes people feel good, and by extension, good about the business.

The first thing any potential customer will notice, whether it’s a small business or a corporate complex, is the exterior. Commercial landscaping draws and directs the eye across the grounds and to the structures. Curb appeal isn’t just for residential dwellings. If the grounds of a commercial property don’t look inviting, individuals will have the same feeling about the entire property and business.

Commercial landscaping factors in the natural features of the land, the best type of plantings for the soil, and irrigation systems to meet soil and plant requirements. It also includes performing needed maintenance on a regular basis, removing any damaged limbs, trees or other plantings, and enhancing building entrances. Even small updates and improvements can make a big difference in the way customers perceive a business.

Managers and owners often equate the aesthetic appeal of a commercial property with the appearance of the structures it contains. While that’s an extremely important aspect, a pleasing green environment has been proven to boost employee productivity, improve workers’ overall health, and attract new customers.

Commercial landscaping is a specialty that requires careful planning and execution. It’s best left to a professional landscaping company that has the knowledge, experience and expertise to transform commercial properties into showcases that will work to retain current clients, attract new customers, and encourage productivity.

Controlling Water Consumption

A lush, green outdoor environment requires water, but ensuring that lawns and plantings obtain the liquid they need can be expensive and result in unintended consequences that include pooling, puddling, runoff, and erosion. There are a variety of ways to control water consumption ranging from irrigation systems to landscaping.

One way to control water consumption is by installing plants that have low water requirements. A variety of trees and bushes provide beauty and shade, while offering flowers that are attractive to bees, butterflies and hummingbirds and fruits that attract song birds.

Flowers such as bougainvillea, moss roses, living stones and blanket flowers require less water than most and bloom readily in beds for a splash of color. Many also have dense root balls that won’t be easily uprooted in the event of heavy rains. Mulching will help hold moisture longer and impede evaporation for less watering.

An irrigation system makes any watering task easier. Today’s systems are programmable to manage the delivery of water. They provide the right amount of water at the correct time for efficiency and savings in time and money. The best time to water is early morning or late in the evening to minimize evaporation.

A properly landscaped property will go a long way toward avoiding problems with drainage that can result in unwanted runoff that wastes water and deprives plants of the moisture they need. Landscaping for controlling water consumption can include a variety of methods that also provide attractive features and interest in residential and commercial areas.

One way is to use rocks in low spots to create a “rock creek.” Perforated pipes can be installed that channels water into the ground rather than letting it pool. Another technique is creating a rain garden that captures moisture for less watering.

With the proper landscaping, anyone can have lush, green grounds without spending a fortune on watering costs. The installation of metered irrigation systems eliminates water wastage and the time-consuming task of watering. A landscaping professional can design and create a complete eco-system that controls water consumption in an efficient and cost effective manner.

Commercial Irrigation: What it Takes to Keep the Grass Green

Irrigation is an essential element for keeping the grass lush and green at commercial sites. A green site is inviting, increases the value, and makes a positive statement about the property. Unfortunately, many managers and owners are fixated on the structures and overlook the highly-important aspect of the outward appearance of the grounds.

It doesn’t matter how well maintained buildings may appear, if the grounds are surrounded by brown grass, trees and bushes, it will make a bad impression on potential investors, renters and buyers. They won’t see the potential and assume that structures are in a similar state as the lawn. Well-maintained grounds provide a higher return on investment and it all begins with an irrigation system.

Modern irrigation systems are convenient and economical. An irrigation specialist can install a system that automatically applies the proper amount of water and at the correct time to promote the growth of strong, healthy roots. The expert will configure the system to minimize pooling, puddling, runoff, and ensure owners aren’t watering sidewalks and paved areas.

Property owners have choices when installing irrigation. Traditional irrigation systems use sprinkler heads to disperse water over the greatest amount of space and distance. They can be programmed to perform scheduled deep watering for optimal growth. Grounds that have been neglected or are dying need more careful attention until they’ve recovered.

One of the most efficient and cost-effective options is a drip irrigation system and they’re particularly advantageous for flower beds and similar areas. Water is slowly introduced into the soil directly at ground level. The water doesn’t touch leaves or blossoms, thereby eliminating unsightly water marks that can occur and it discourages the growth of blight and mold.

Automated irrigation systems eliminate the time-consuming job of watering, allowing staff to handle other tasks. The systems are economical to operate and provide the moisture needed to keep commercial properties green and inviting.

Waterlogged: How to Prevent Fungus From Growing and Spreading

Excessive rain, overwatering, and poor drainage can result in fungal growth in lawns. It can appear as a white looking dust or brown spots. A fungal lawn infection may also display as patches of gray, black, yellow, orange, red or purple areas. When wet, it may have a greasy or slimy appearance.

Preventing and treating fungal lawn infections is a multi-step process and while the average homeowner can address some problem on their own, it’s always best to call in a professional. There are multiple types of fungus and additional problems may need to be remedied.

One of the first steps is identifying if thatching has occurred. It’s a combination of dead and/or built up grass, stems and roots that are produced faster than they can decompose. It heats and dries out quickly, robbing grass of the moisture it needs. Thatch can also provide a breeding ground for fungus and insects.

Thatching can happen after extensive rains, improper watering habits, and in hot and humid climates. The wrong fertilizer, compacted ground, the wrong grass for the soil, and mowing grass too short can all lead to fungal diseases.

It’s important for lawns to be properly aerated by loosening the soil and it’s a task that should be done every 1-2 years. Motorized and non-motorized lawn equipment is available to do the job. Aeration allows water, fertilizer and air to penetrate below the surface, reach the roots, and nourish the lawn. Individuals that are doing it themselves should thoroughly water the lawn 1-2 days before aerating.

If fungus is detected in the lawn, folk remedies range from baking soda and neem oil to compost tea for small patches, but they can also damage the lawn. A lawn or landscaping service is experienced in treating the fungi that affects lawns and can apply the correct fungicide based on the severity, type and soil condition.

Lawn fungus can happen anytime, in any weather conditions, and to lawns that are well-cared for. There are numerous types of fungal infections that can damage lawns and the best solution is to consult with a specialist. They will have the experience needed to diagnose and treat the fungus effectively.
